backpacker #4 | A German tradition in a Kiwi town.

-Police!!! Police!!! Verena Yelled …

I'm sure everyone present thought that we would end up in jail or be paying a big fine at least. We had been drinking in the street and we were still drinking inside someone's private property after we had been playing with the electric fence for half an hour.

Playing games on someone's property. By @cnandofer

We were drunk and the situation seemed that bad at the moment, that everybody kept drinking and waited for the policeman to approach us. Maybe that was the best thing to do, the policeman must have thought that one of us owned the place because he didn't tell us anything for being inside private property. The only drama he made was about the New World’s trolley. Yep, we had stolen a trolley from the supermarket as well...

After the Germans girls told him that it was a German tradition and that they missed their country, he left us alone as long as we took the trolley back to New World in 2 hours. The girls even negotiated the time, originally the policeman said 1 hour and at the end, it took us 3 hours to bring it back. He was a very nice guy, or maybe he found the Germans very attractive. In either way, he let us continue with our stuff.

Certainly, it was true that is a German tradition or at least a tradition from a certain region of Germany. On the morning of the 1st of May, they usually walk and drink to some place, have a picnic there, drink, play, eat and walk back while drinking. So that's what we were doing that day.

I didn't start the tradition from 10 in the morning like everyone else because I had been looking for work that day, so I was relatively sober compared to everyone.

The germans were too lazy to carry stuff, so why not bring the trolley with us? By @cnandofer

Everything was good again, we had got rid of the policeman, we were drinking and walking back when someone shouted again:

-Police! Police!

It was the same chubby police that asked us to take back the trolley, at least we were on our way to return it. But this time he wasn't alone, he came followed by an old lady in another car.

My first thought was, 'Must be the owner of the place where we were... We're so fucked'.

-Why were you throwing yourself at the cars??? - Said the policeman.

-This lady says that she almost hit one of you because you were throwing yourself at the car!

This time the policeman was not as friendly as a few hours before. He yelled, got angry and asked if we wanted to be deported from New Zealand.

-I was driving at 100km/h on the road and you were throwing yourself at my car! I could have killed someone and gone to jail. - Said the woman.

After listening to her; she sounded a little bit crazy, the police changed his attitude, we made it clear to him that we were not throwing ourselves at the cars and apologized several times. I think that what made the policeman change his mind was the woman saying that she was driving at 100 km/h on a 70 km/h road and that she really sounded a little bit crazy. Finally, he let us go, even if the woman was not very happy about it.

-Only the person with the trolley should be on the road, he said.

The truth is that we hadn't been throwing ourselves at the car, but to be completely honest, we were taking pictures in the middle of the road and a car passed very close to one of us at some point, I guess that it was the car of the woman who came with the police.

Ok, we may have been a little bit in the middle of the road. By @cnandofer

In the end, since I was the only sober person in the group, to avoid any more problems for anyone I decided to take the trolley by myself to the New World. I sent everybody back to the holiday park; that way I wouldn't have to take care of the drunk people, putting an end to the German tradition.

It wouldn't be the end of what happened that night, because I found someone very interesting on my way back to New World...
