- Under the chairmanship of Ceylon's Foreign Minister Hameed, the Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement begins in the Belgrade Save Center. Yugoslavia's President Josip Tito holds the opening speech for the conference, which lasts until July 29.
- The US Navy failed two attempts to fire cruise missiles of the type "Tomahawk". Both missiles get out of control and explode.
- The Bayreuth Wagner Festival will open with a new production of the "Flying Dutchman" by the East German director Harry Kupfer. The musical director is Dennis Russel Davies.
