PARTIAL OR GEAR UP LANDING

FCTM 8.x [Partial or Gear Up Landing] - Do not spend too much time trying to clear a gear problem and meanwhile reducing the possibility of diverting to a more suitable airport or even run out of fuel, such as :

  • low pass over the runway in general doesn’t lead to much additional information
  • foraming of the runway provides only minimla benefit

Consider diverting to a more suitable airport with long and wide runway, and a higher level fire fighting capability. Reduce fuel to practical minimum. The main goal is to keep the airplane on concrete to limit structural damage!

NOSE GEAR INOP

  • Move all passengers to rear of cabin
  • It is recommended to lower the nose after touchdown and gently fly it onto the runway ; keeping the nose up will result in a brutal nose drop, increasing the risk of breaking up the aircraft body structure
  • Make sure to lock the window(upwards) should you evacuate through the flight deck number two window

ONE MAIN LANDING GEAR INOP

  • Move all passengers to the gear down side of aisle
  • Select all fuel pumps to OFF on short final
  • Land off centerline, on the gear down side of the runway
  • Avoid using speed brakes, this will cause the wing to drop
  • Use reverse thrust only for the gear down side engine
  • Consider removing fuel and hydraulics from the engine by placing the Start Lever to Cutoff or (override) pulling the Fire Switch, after touchdown prior to engine ground contact
  • Use nose wheel steering for directional control below 100 kts

BOTH MAIN LANDING GEAR INOP

  • Engines will contact the surface prior to the nose gear
  • Use nose wheel steering for directional control
  • Select all fuel pumps to OFF on short final

ALL GEAR UP OR PARTIALLY EXTENDED

  • Engines will contact the surface first
  • Adequate directional control remains available through the rudder during initial ground slide
  • Select all fuel pumps to OFF on short final
  • Consder removing fuel and hydraulics from both engines by placing the Start Levers to CUTOFF or (override) pulling the Fire Switches, after touchdown

Landing
Maintain standard target speed for FLaps 30/40
Use speed brakes only when stopping distance is critical, Speed brakes will cause the wing to drop. Speed brakes may also get jammed in UP position, complicating evacuation via overwing exits.
Use reverse thrust only when stopping distance is critical.
Be ready to take-over with nose wheel steering for directional contral upon roll-out (if extended)

ATC
Advise ATC that one or more landing gear are not extended
Request : - Weather forecast at ETA( = after fuel burn-off)
- Fire brigade to inspect landing gear after landing
Report : - Holding time required to burn off fuel and prepare for approach
- Souls on board
- Fuel upon landing
- Any or no dangerous goods on board

Cabin Crew
SOP - Brief the CCM using company guidelines and call-outs
Refer to MRG [RISK LEVEL] for guidelines : a full emergency landing preparation with evacuation is recommended
Passengers SOP - Reassure passengers in line with company guidelines
Example : “Technical problem with landing gear. The landing will be a little rough. Follow cabin crew instructions.”
