Preamble
The world Peace and Understanding Day, also called "World Understanding Day", is a day that is observed annually on February 23rd. The day is dedicated to promoting world peace and understanding among people from different backgrounds, cultures and religion.
The Rotary International, a global organization that advocate peace and goodwill founded the day in 1950. The aim of World Peace and Understanding Day is to encourage people to come together to promote peace and understanding in their communities and around the world.
What happens on this day
On this day, different events and activities are performed by individuals, organizations, and communities to promote peace and understanding. These may include peace marches, seminars and conferences, cultural festivals, and charity events.
The day provides an opportunity for people to reflect on their own attitudes towards peace and understanding, and to take action to promote these values in their daily lives. By working towards greater understanding and acceptance of different cultures and beliefs, we can create a more peaceful and harmonious world for all.
How Nigerians celebrate world peace and understanding day
One of the ways Nigeria celebrates World Peace and Understanding Day is by organizing peace rallies, conferences, and seminars that promote peace and understanding among the diverse ethnic and religious groups in the country. These events bring together people from different walks of life to discuss ways to promote peaceful coexistence and understanding.
In addition, many schools in Nigeria organize special programs and activities on this day to promote peace and understanding among students. These programs may include peace-themed debates, poetry and essay competitions, and cultural exchanges that help students appreciate the diverse cultures and backgrounds of their classmates. Moreover, some Nigerian organizations and groups use this day to launch peace initiatives and campaigns aimed at reducing violence and conflicts in the country. Such initiatives include outreach programs to conflict-prone areas like the one between ikot Offiong and oku-iboko in my state Akwa Ibom, peacebuilding and conflict resolution workshops, and interfaith dialogues that promote understanding and tolerance.

• Increased awareness: World Peace and Understanding Day raises awareness about the need for peace and understanding in the world. It encourage individuals and communities to be more mindful of the importance of peaceful coexistence, and to take steps towards promoting it.
• Improved relationships: Celebrating World Peace and Understanding Day help to improve relationships between different communities and cultures. By acknowledging and respecting differences, people can build bridges and work towards a common goal of peace.
• Enhanced cooperation: It makes people unite by a common goal, and also work together to achieve it.
• Reduced conflict: So many communities have settle their differences through this commemoration and they are able to live their lives without fear of violence or persecution.
Summary
To crown ot all, the world Peace and Understanding Day have a significant impact on the community and the country at large by promoting awareness, improving relationships, enhancing cooperation, reducing conflict, and increasing empathy. So by working towards these goals, we can create a better world for ourselves and future generations.
