Social Media and Its Ugly Side
Social media is a form of electronic communication such as websites for social networking in which users get to share information, ideas, messages and such. Some of the most popular social media sites are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. Billions of people are connected to these sites which serves as a platform for them to interact and share information with everyone from different sides of the globe. As social media help others become well-informed about the current happenings, social media has also been linked to a lot of negative effects.
One of it is depression. Some people tend to compare themselves to other people's posts and they would feel bad about themselves of not getting the same attention as others. Some may be interacting with others passing emojis and messages looking like they have a lot of social capital but those people are found to have more feelings of perceived social isolation. Some would even lead to suicidal.
Sleep deprivation. Young people are the ones who are adversely affected by this since adolescence is where most important biological and social changes occur thus, teens have a harder time to falling asleep at night than others. And social media contributes a lot to this based on studies. Lack of sleep is linked to an increased risk of heart diseases, poor academic performance and even develop a risky behavior. It is an alarming effect as it may take a toll on someones mental and physical health.
Being in social media also reduces the time of someone to engage in physical activities. Most people would rather spend time with their phones instead of engaging in sports and athletics. These ugly side of social media has to be addressed to everyone. It is our responsibility to explore the good and bad impact to know how we can remedy these effects and how we can control the use of social media for the sake of everyone whose experiencing its negative effects.
