GROWING AVOCADOS in TEXAS

I attempted to grow an avocado tree in the last 6 months. I got to about 5 feet tall in a pot, mostly indoors. I tried to transplant it but it died shortly after. The problem was, I transplanted it in clay so it had no drainage. The PH was probably radically different than potting soil. I'm going to attempt a few more. Any tips for successfully growing this delicious food?
