A new study shows that while nearly half of people who experience cardiac arrest will experience some symptoms 24 hours beforehand, the real alarming signal varies by gender.

The difference is that women experience “difficulty breathing” the day before, while men experience “some sharp pains in the chest”.

"Our findings could lead to a new paradigm for the prevention of sudden cardiac death," said the study's lead author Sumit Chough.

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is reduced and the blockage is often due to a buildup of fat and cholesterol in the heart's arteries.

The most common symptoms of a heart attack include:

Chest pain that feels like pressure or heaviness.
Referring pain or discomfort to the shoulder, arm, back, neck, jaw, or teeth, and sometimes upper abdomen.
cold sweat
exhaustion.
heartburn or indigestion.
Sudden dizziness or light-headedness.
nausea.
