Thrust vectoring is an used technique in rockets.
The v-22 is using the engines as a helicopter for landing and take off, but this is super difficult.
Breaking after landing has to be comfortable for the passengers :)
The old russian airplanes have a very robust gear, so that they can land on grass, sand, ice.
