Tips for Authors Digest #2: Building Your World

in #authors3 years ago

When you're creating a story world, you want to make sure it's populated with everything you need to make your readers go WOW!

To that end, I've created a list of tips to help do just this. Starting with...

Tip #1: Practice Worldbuilding

Worldbuilding is a fun art, which is why you should make sure you're doing it often. You don't want to overdo it, but a little bit every week will go a long way. Try following these tips as a starting place: https://kindlepreneur.com/world-building/

Tip #2: Learn from Real-world Mythology

Our own myths and history provide a great background on which to build our worldbuilding. I recommend doing all you can to learn about specific mythologies and what they're all about. For example, if you wanted to learn more about Chinese mythology, you could research legendary figures like the Monkey King, as seen here: https://mythbank.com/sun-wukong/

Tip #3: Read in the Genre

This should honestly be tip #1. If you don't read the genre, you won't have a clue how to do your worldbuilding. So you might want to start with a list like this one to get started, then dig through and read everything: https://topscifibooks.com/books-like-enders-game/

Tip #4: Build an Author Website

An author website can be a great hub for many of your worldbuilding notes or related items. At the very least, it can be a great place to define a personal brand, like our friend Sam has done here: https://nerdybookgirl.com/

And that's it! More tips to come.
