Australia launches vape reform bill, offenders will face up to seven years in prison
Mar 21, 2024. Australian Health Minister Mark Butler introduced the Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (Vaping Reforms) Bill 2024. The bill preventes the manufacturing, advertising, supply and commercial industries from possessing non-therapeutic disposable vapes. It aims to protect young people from the harms of vapes.
In conjunction with regulatory changes introduced earlier this year, we can find out something. The bill would restrict the import, distribution and supply of all vapes and restrict them to established pharmaceutical supply chains. Once the legislation comes into effect, tobacconists, vape shops and convenience stores will no longer be able to legally supply vapes of any type. Thus ensuring patients have legal access to vapes.
At the same time, the bill includes a framework for offenses and civil penalties targeting the importation, manufacture, supply, advertising and commerce of illegal vapes. Increased penalties for convicted offenders, up to seven years in prison.
The reforms are consistent with the guidelines of the Australian Tobacco Strategy 2023-2030.
