Ghost Tour of the Rocks in Sydney

Getting Spooky downunder

The wife and I were lucky to have a friend take care of our three little terrorists a couple of weeks ago and allow us to have our first date night in 2 years!

Before we got married and started having kids we used to be avid ghost hunters. We spent a night at a haunted mansion in Port Talbot in Wales, and investigated an old Quarantine Station in Perth, Western Australia. Now, the only thing that troubles me at night is bub wanting a bottle!!!

We looked online and found the Rocks Ghost Tour, and having booked up were ready for a night of spooky fun.

We met about 6:45pm near the Cadmans Cottage in Circular Quay. The tour guide was stood in a doorway with a little lantern, a large brimmed dark hat and black trenchcoat! Perfect! We waited for the others to join, about 6 others and we got underway.

The tour started with a quick intro to everyone, torches were handed out and off we went. We made our way through the back streets of the Rocks, where the tour guide told us a number of gruesome stories and let us know of the experiences of others who had been on the tour or worked in the area. The guide had a fantastic knowledge of the area and ghosts which were supposed to frequent them. Her style was engaging without being corny, which it could so easily have been.

It was disappointing that the some of the other guests were being loud and obnoxious, often talking over the guide, but there was little you could do about that. You do get given access to a number of building which you normally wouldn't if you were to take yourself around. It would have been better if we could have spent more time investigating these properly, but unfortunately that wasn't the case.

One of my favourite spots was out the back of a little ally, where a house window was meant to have curtains or faces appear when you took pictures, and a smell of blood was meant to be had in certain parts of the road. One of the group did apparently snap a picture of the curtains mysteriously appearing, but i didn't get to see it. I did get this super moody picture though, which also captures the guide.

We also visited an excavated house site under some modern buildings, which was something you really wouldn't get access to by yourself. It was great to see some of Sydney's history as well as the ghost info too.

The tour lasted about 2 hours. There was lots of walking, but there was enough to keep you interested and talk about as you were moving through. I'd recommend this for a causal night out. If you are a more serious ghost hunter you might want to try and book out the whole tour for your group to ensure it's taken seriously as you want .
