Cool stuff invented by AustralianssteemCreated with Sketch.

Here in Australia we're not afraid of a little self-promotion. This usually is more prevalent after a few beverages of the alcoholic nature when deeds we have done get somewhat exaggerated. A lot exaggerated usually. However, there are a few inventions that have made a difference in people's lives that you may not know originated in Australia. Here's a few.

1992 - John O'Sullivan and CSIRO - WIFI
Thankfully this top bloke has a good noggin his shoulders! Where would we be without WIFI? CSIRO stands for Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation.

1965 - Jack Grant - Inflatable escape ramp
This employee of the Qantas (airline) developed the escape slide that deployed from the side of aircraft in an emergency situation. They are now mandatory equipment on most major airlines around the world. The ramp also doubles as a floatation platform in the plane ditches in water.

1980's Reserve Bank & CSIRO - Polymer bank notes
These bank notes are very difficult to forge and have a lifespan 10 times longer than traditional paper notes. It doesn't help them stay in your pocket any longer though :) Pictured is the elusive $100 bill.

1950's - Dr. David Warren - Black box flight recorder
This remarkable device was developed to record and log flight data and was designed to be virtually indestructible. The box is not actually black however, it is orange to make it more visible at a crash site. Australia was the first country to make it mandatory for all commercial flights but now it is compulsory around the world.

1889 - Arthur Arnot - Electric drill
Initially designed to drill through rock. The Union Electric Company of Melbourne patented the electric drill in 1889! Seriously.

These are just a few of the things Australian's have invented or developed. If you're interested in a few more do some research on the following list:

Wave piercing catamaran
Spray on skin
Wine casks
Baby safety capsule
Ultrasound scanner
Cochlear implant
Zinc cream
Plastic spectacle lenses
Multifocal contact lenses
Electronic cardiac pacemaker
Refrigerator
Army tank
Dual flush toilet

And so on...

We live in a comfortable, safe and interesting world due to the smarts of people like the inventors above. Of course there are so many other amazing inventions around the world as well and, hopefully so many more yet to be discovered.

Were a creative mob. Shame most of these things are made outside of the county

Yep, I agree we are creative. Unfortunately though we don't seem to be able to hang on to manufacturing. We can't compete against the low cost of wages in other countries I guess. It's a shame. Thanks for commenting and reading my post.

great patriotic blog --rock on mate
i think we invented the Hills Hoist and the Victa lawn mower and of course pavlova too.

We sure did! Well, there's some contention over the pavlova though. Those buggers from NZ think it's theirs. I'm not so sure. :)

i investigated and wrote a blog about it around a month ago - it is ours

Never been a fan of pavlova. I like apple crumble though.

don't mind a bit of sticky date too - and tonight my wife and i had yogurt, blueberries and muesli - rock on

Cool post. I didn't know about a couple of them.

Also this.

Thanks @choogirl and that chart pretty much sums up life does it not? :)

I love it. I've been using it for years!

Hee, hee... love that diagram!

Don't forget some other important shit we came up with........
Hills Hoist and Victa Mower already covered by @daydreams4rock

What About the :
Stump Jump Plough
Vegemite
The Ute
Solar Hot Water
The Fridge

And in the early days:
Didgeridoo
Woomera
Boomerang? (I think it may have been imported?)

As you say, it's a never ending list.

If only we could deploy the boomerang these days. You know... Got beef with someone...BOOMERANG them! I'd like to see cops issued with them instead of handguns. That way they wouldn't be able to shoot the wrong people. They'd simply have no chance of hitting anything at all.

That's pretty cool man, The drill was surprising, I think i'm definitely going to have to look up the army tank one, that is super surprising.
