Underwater Bodypainted UV shoot with Sarah
Sarah was my first Sydney underwater model for the year being back in Sydney. I've done a number of photoshoots since and how well she did the time we collaborated again on one of my more highly technically challenging concepts.
This time round we are shooting underwater in the evening under near UV lights that have been designed for viewing bio-florescence in marine life while diving in a pool.
I airbrushed her using waterproof body paints first doing a light coating to show skin and then texturing with stencil patterns. Im still a newbie with bodypainting but I like the challenge and creativity it provides. I have boxes of neon/fluro coloured fabrics and accessories and let Sarah design her own minimal outfit in order to show more painted skin.
In total the prepping and painting took around 3 hours to complete. I wish I had more airbrush knowledge as it seemed to clog up a fair bit and hard to get a wide spray area to cover more surface area quickly and save a lot of time.
The glowing backdrop I created the night before the shoot. I used a flexible net fencing from Bunnings (Hardware Store) as the base and got creative with fabrics, strings and neon accessories to try and create some glowing seaweeds and coral. I mostly tied them to the base or hot glue gunned them in and still a working progress but has given me something I can build on for future shoots.
The lighting came in the form of 800watts of Blue 450nm LED lights across two floodlight units - Its some serious LED power. Attached to the camera I also have two blue/dichroic filtered strobes.
Camera- Canon 5DmIII with 16-35mm f4L IS in Ikelite housing and dome. 2x DS161's Strobes.
A lot of work and preparing went into this experimental shoot but its all a buildup for my most technical challenge which will be shooting it in the ocean.
Hope you like this series.
Underwater model shoots is a self funded personal creative art project I do for the sake of creating art and also challenging myself technically to improve as a photographer. Aside from being extremely challenging in all aspects its also one of the most expensive and high risk due to cost of equipment, chance of equipment damage that insurers will not cover, safety for myself and the model/team. Always great to get some feedback, support or help finding sponsors/clients so I can keep these personal projects alive.

Wow, these are stunning! Looks like a lot of hard work went into this shoot and the result is totally worth it!
Thanks Melody. Yeah we spend much more time preparing then shooting when it comes to this style. The painting probably takes the longest.
Very interesting that someone is shooting under water

Beautiful! I love the concept. Would it be possible for her to wear a neon contacts? If there is even such a thing.
