Auction Finds - Africa, Anything & Everything

in #auction8 years ago

Quite obviously, living in South Africa, we finds heaps of Africana, which is fortunate for us as this is a category that covers a vast array of subject matter and is very popular to collect.

I had to build this old wooden puzzle to check if it had all it's pieces.

My husband picked up this stunning print, enhanced with oil paint of General Jan J Smuts, as well as the original photo below.

"Field Marshal Jan Christiaan Smuts OM, CH, ED, PC, KC, FRS[1] (24 May 1870 – 11 September 1950) was a prominent South African and British Commonwealth statesman, military leader and philosopher. In addition to holding various cabinet posts, he served as prime minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 until 1924 and from 1939 until 1948. Although Smuts had originally advocated racial segregation and opposed the enfranchisement of black Africans, his views changed and he backed the Fagan Commission's findings that complete segregation was impossible. Smuts subsequently lost the 1948 election to hard-line Afrikaners who created apartheid. He continued to work for reconciliation and emphasised the British Commonwealth’s positive role until his death in 1950.[2]He led a Boer Commando in the Second Boer War for the Transvaal. During the First World War, he led the armies of South Africa against Germany, capturing German South-West Africa and commanding the British Army in East Africa. From 1917 to 1919, he was also one of the members of the British Imperial War Cabinet and he was instrumental in the founding of what became the Royal Air Force (RAF). He became a field marshal in the British Army in 1941, and served in the Imperial War Cabinet under Winston Churchill. He was the only man to sign both of the peace treaties ending the First and Second World Wars." Wikipedia

The photo below features Sir De Villiers Graaff, a member of parliament from 1948, and another (?). I had never heard of him, but my friend from the museum identified him for me. I have no idea if this photo will sell, probably not, but as you should know by now, we try everything at least once! This has proved profitable to us in the past. I once listed a photo for R5 ($0,37) and ended up receiving R1000 ($75). Another time my husband picked up some old photos, featuring South African politicians of the 1930's & 1940's, inside a dumpster at an auction premises, and we made good money from them!

I've been building up a small collection of vintage blazers, and decided it was time to list them. They include one for a Teacher's Training College, my old high school (before my time in the 1980's), a national shooting blazer...and another unidentified one!

I also listed these old cloth badges, some of them South African military, for sale.

Below is a perfect example of trying to sell anything and everything. These are classified documents in English and Afrikaans from the 1980's. They are part a larger lot of papers, mostly old government financial statements, which I am in the process of listing. Will someone want them? I have no idea???!
