Learn How To Be Polite At Work - Follow These Tips
We all know that etiquette requires us to be courteous with everyone we meet during our day and night out, but what many people don't realize is that etiquette also requires us to be polite to those around us every single day. It's a simple concept, really, but one that doesn't always get applied the right way in everyday life: Treat people the way you would like to be treated.
In many ways, this is the same thing you would say when you are traveling abroad, where you will need to conduct yourself in a way that will not offend those around you and get you into trouble. For instance, many people would say something like "I hope your trip was a pleasant one, since I have just seen some terrible stuff on the internet."
This may be a good idea when you are traveling, but if you are meeting someone you work with on a daily basis, it could be taken the wrong way. It is never acceptable to say something like "I hope your trip was a pleasant one, because I've just seen some horrible stuff on the web." This isn't to say that you shouldn't tell people where you are going or what you are doing or who you are with, but being overly friendly or too casual about things can really offend other people.
This same principle applies to your day to day life as well. Treat people in your office and other places where you socialize the way you would want to be treated, and you will be more likely to be treated with respect and dignity.
One thing that you probably won't think of right away, but is really important when you meet people, is to make sure you give them some space. If you walk up to someone and tell them to stop and listen, chances are they will be very uncomfortable. You may also feel uncomfortable walking up and asking them questions, especially if they look like a jerk.
When you have a meeting with other people, the first thing you should do is greet them and say hi, but then don't go on a lengthy tangent about all the things you are going to tell them. Instead, just say hi and then say something like "let me help you find your purse," or "please move to the left," so they are comfortable enough to leave you alone.
Treat everyone you business with respect, and in a nice way that show you care, even if you are talking to a complete stranger. And in the end, just remember that everyone has their own idea of what is polite. So if you're at a restaurant, and they ask you how you're doing, just say "fine," and smile a little.
Keep in mind that etiquette isn't always strict, but it's always better than being rude, which is often just a bad choice of words. So learn to say hello to the elderly, tell the driver where you're going, and even pay more attention when someone tells you to keep your seat in the car or to hold it.
And while you're at it, always follow the same rule at home that you do when you're out and about. Always keep the door and windows shut when you leave for work, for example, to avoid unpleasant surprises like unexpected visits from the mailman or neighbors.
It's also a good idea to know how to deal with difficult people on your important day to day job. By respecting their time and giving them space, you will find that they treat you more like a regular employee, and not just another client or employee.
So if you are having trouble with how to be polite on your day to day life, just remember to say hello to everyone you meet during the day. in a nice and respectful manner, and then show courtesy and respect to all your clients or employees on a consistent basis. People will treat you that way, which will make you more likely to come back to work every day.
