Laughter, like crying, is an involuntary act for most people. Its operating mechanism resides in respiration, and is produced by interruptions of the exhalation of the breath. The effect of laughter on our cardiovascular system is vasodilator; laughter generates hormonal substances, such as endorphins, which produce a state of psychological well-being, in such a way that it helps protect the cardiovascular system. When we laugh, the endothelium (the inner layer of the blood vessels) relaxes, thus improving blood circulation and lowering blood pressure.
Laughing also helps increase HDL (good cholesterol) and boosts the activity of lymphocytes, agents that help the immune system in the presence of tumor cells. Laughter also reduces the level of hormones associated with stress and increases the level of nitric oxide, a substance that improves circulation, reduces inflammation of blood vessels and prevents the formation of cholesterol plaques.
