About 70 times the word "sex" is used in the Bible

This is a list of passages in the Bible containing the word, “sex.” When you read these, ask yourself how many of them sound perfectly wise, like some God would write, and how many sound more like a bunch of primitive tribesmen projecting their customs, values, and goals into an apparently barbaric ancient mythology.

Genesis 19:5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have SEX with them.”

I understand what you are doing here, but I would push back by saying, when understanding a quote, context is king. Without context a proper true understanding is impossible.

Having said that your right, some of these quotes do "sound more like a bunch of primitive tribesmen projecting their customs, values, and goals into an apparently barbaric ancient mythology", because the Bible was written by a particular set of humans from a particular time in history, which means it is influenced by their language and culture. That is not by itself justification for rejecting the Bible as a whole. If cultural and language bias were justification for rejecting a piece of literature what would we keep?

Even modern literature, written today, or the next great work written tomorrow, will eventually be seen historically as dated, antiquated, and likely backwards.

The question I raise when looking at the Bible is not what silly things does it say, but what message is the document as a whole purporting? Is that message, taken as a whole, valid, reliable, valuable? Clearly I think so, and seemingly you do not.

Hope you can appreciate my comment even if we do disagree.

Have an awesome day.

I agree that context is very important when referencing ancient writings. Some would argue it is just a further interpretation of the pre-existing religions to fit the ever changing societal structure of the world.

I also agree with you that there is a positive message within Sacred texts like the Bible and that is what gives them their power.

"Even modern literature, written today, or the next great work written tomorrow, will eventually be seen historically as dated, antiquated, and likely backwards.", true but then it probably won't be dressed up as being the literal word of a god.

Well, scientology and mormonism would stand staunchly against your point, but more importantly, I think again we need to refocus on whether the bible is discredited simply because some of its teachings are "antiquated" by our approximation today. My main thrust here is that of course we do not see eye to eye with all Biblical scripture, but that is at least in part due to a cultural view that we all grow up in.

Im not saying you are wrong because you have a bias, I am just saying we all have a bias, and yet we sometimes speak about the bible like we come to the converation without a cultural bias to begin with. And we need to be careful when cast something aside simply because it doesnt fit our worldview.

I cannot fathom why a person needs to wade through some ancient, largely incomprehensible text, and figure out which bits are obsolete and which bits make sense.
The activity implies you already have a well balanced morality, so just use it.

When you look up the context of most of these quotes, you'll either find a longer trainwreck of barbarism or at least more inapplicable, culturally-relative values, customs, and beliefs. The Bible wasn't just influenced by Jewish culture. It was the manifesto of Jewish culture, and taken on a whole, it paints a clear picture of a tribal theocracy struggling to fight its neighbors and manage its people.

The number of absurd verses in the Bible point to the fact that, on a whole, the Bible is not divine. You can put this to the test yourself. The Skeptic's Annotated Bible put together a list of every commandment in the Bible. If you go through them and check which ones you agree with and practice, you're going to pass over more than you tick. Nobody follows the majority of the Bible's teachings, and we shouldn't revere a broken clock for being right twice a day.

The Book of Manu in Hindu lore is equally absurd. Indian philosophy is mixed, though, with numerous absurdities embedded with a few plausible spiritual sublimities. I'm saying this because I don't want to come across as just picking on the Bible.
@infidel 1258: the overarching theme of the Bible is that humans are nothing more than Goyim to be exploited as cattle if one ascribes to The Torah; or that humans overall are to be burned like chaff and tormented forever for being screw-ups in one life.
Whether O.T. or N.T. there is no escaping the fact that this is a very unpleasant God. Which is fine by me if everyone just admitted that and stopped pretending that this is a great God of love. It is not!
This God, if it existed, is more akin to a psychopath!

I have looked at the bible from an atheist perspective, I was atheist for more than 30 years.

I have reviewed many, not all, of the "contradictions" and "mistakes" and commonly cited absurdities raised by many modern non-theologians. This is perhaps too big of a conversation to have in this manner, but suffice it to say, I don't revere the bible because it has a few great life lessons (ie., love your neighbor), and I dont discount the value of its teachings because it has some hard to understand, contextually defined, moments (ie., the Levitical instructions around how to remain "pure", and when/when not to come into God's presence).

I trust and revere the Bible because I have assessed evidence, as best I can, about the likelihood that God is real, and Jesus' claim to being that God, and through my investigation I have resolved myself to accept Jesus' claim. From there I have applied that to my truth to my life, which involves to the best of my ability to reconciling the authority of the Bible -God's word- with my life, "contradictions" and all. Usually that means pushing against, and really dissecting the history and context of each "problem" I discover, so see where that takes me. So far, over about 4 years, I have had a lot of struggle with the issues you are raising but I simply cannot shake what to me is sufficient evidence that God does exist, and Jesus is the physical embodiment of God.

I know it sounds crazy, like I said I used to be atheist.

I dont have an easy answer for all the questions or problems that people like yourself raise but daily I struggle with these topics, not because the Bible says, but because I trust God.

I dont suspect you will be interested in this content but in the hopes of perhaps sharing some of my influencing sources I will share this link, it is a brief explanation about biblical symbolism, good and evil, sacrifice and atonement. Hopefully it will provide you some value. Thanks for the great conversation and God bless.

Oooh, edited my reply to include a different video that may be better to show my faith despite the old laws set out in the old testament, and how that aligns with and informs the new testament and the Christian faith. If you're up for it, both videos are great, and together they begin to reply to your criticism of the bible.

All adults are sick of this propaganda, sir.
I would like to test your faculties of reason, though, with one question that has to be answered with a yes or no. I have no desire to continue this unless you answer truthfully with one word without equivocation.
Would you consider yourself a good father if you punished your child forever for doing something wrong? Yes or no?
Please don't elaborate or waste my time. Yes or No?
