Question to @zoef regarding the post 'Some thought about theism and atheism'

in #atheisism6 years ago (edited)

I'm intrigued - I'm not interested in changing your views but I am surprised at your opening remark.

"As some might already know I a man Atheist. Why you might ask. Well because I believe in science."

My question is that if you understand science then you will know that science is the daughter of philosophy. Philosophy is the higher position and theology is a form of philosophy, albeit a specific one.

For this reason it is difficult for science and a religious belief to be at odds with each other. As you probably are aware a Monk called Gregor Mendel studied pea plants to form the study of modern scientific genetics.

Georges Lemaître, the proposer of the Big Bang theory for the commencement of the Universe, was a Belgian Catholic priest.
There was no conflict with his held belief and the scientific discovery of the universe, indeed the majority of scientific leap forwards (but not all) have been made by people with a religious belief.

I get there are a minority of people, as there are in any society, who are ignorant of their own human history but surely it must pay for such an important decision, which you have already made, to at least recognise that without religion the science you referance wouldn't be what it is?

There is also the old fallacy of mistakenly believing that all scientists are Atheists. Certainly in todays society, with so much ignorance, false truth and fake news, I am sure we can all understand why, like politicians, many scientists keep their faith quietly personal. Who would want a gibbering reincarnation of early humankind lobbing rocks without warning, I certainly wouldn't. But many eminent scientists do have a belief in God.

Ard Louis is Professor of theoretical physics at Oxford University and a Christian. Below is a link to a talk he's given on faith. Apologies it is not on D.Tube but its the best I could find quickly.

There are many clear links between science and a belief in God. I won't bore you with my personal views, after all why discuss something you deny exists. But to explain, if I may:

The biblical account (bible is a collection of 66 books - the first five were probably written by or under the instruction of Moses, a historical figure around 4000 years ago) commences with two creation myths.

These originate with 'God' (whom you don't believe exists) speaking everything into being from nothing (Ex Nihlo). Obviously you feel this is pure fantasy but it is of note that, even though folk wish to deny the Big bang, that science currently believes the best model of the Universe commencing was everything coming into being from relative nothing. There is no dispute between science and theology regarding this.

You will also note that the two creation myths utilse time for the first account and space for the second account. Now I know that you may well argue 4000 years ago they were much more advanced in their scientific knowledge than we are today, but for me, as a simple person, I found that quite interesting.

Finally, I am sure you are well aware of Professor Anthony Flew?

He developed the majority of Atheist philosophy that people like Christoper Hitchins and Professor Richard Dawkins established their arguments around. Prof Flew was a huge and capable genuis when it came to philosophical thought. He successfully argued against there being a God, winning nearly all of his debates and influencing science to include philosophical input in its search for truth. The only problem was that Professor Flew was a very capable man and one of great integrity.

He believed in the evolution of his argument, something developed as a construct by Socretes. Thus he followed the question where ever the answer took him. In 2004, having been declared the Worlds greatest Atheist philosopher, his peer reviewed research took him to the conclusion that his whole lifes work had been to arrive at a point where he changed his mind.

He released the book, link below, which explains why.

Now I must urge you to never change your mind. Please stay as a commited Athiest and never change that. Professor Flew, in his honesty, was viciously attacked by his former collegues for daring to publically change his mind.

His book is here - it is not a religious book but it is a brilliant read

Finally you say that you are not bothered what people believe and I applaud that. That is the pivot point where people, those who only have what they have, in their decision to not believe, can also meet people of at least the Christian faith.

The faith postion is straightforward. No person of faith ever causes another person to have faith.

It is not for me to worry about what you choose to believe or not believe. If, and obviously you would never allow it to happen, you suddenly changed your mind, then that would not be due to me. I truly see faith as a gift from the God you deny exists, and therefore it is not mine to offer you nor to force upon you.

It does mean though, that we can enjoy this life in peace and harmony. My reason for this enquiry is purely to highlight that this popular misconception regarding faith and science is a piece of fake news in an era of post truth which relates, of course, to the seeking of relative truth whilst denying the existence of absolute truth.

Ok this was a lot to read. Here is my response

Hi @Zoef - thank you for replying - I thought it easiest to take your reply and ask questions , comment next to it - if you read to the end you will find there are places we agree with each other and actually I think if you go back to my question you will see it was about science - thanks again and link here
