Can a Zone 1 Sensor Be Used in Zone 2?
Selecting the right explosion-proof sensor for hazardous areas is not only about meeting project specifications—it is also essential for ensuring operational safety and regulatory compliance.
One question we frequently receive from customers is: Can a Zone 1 pressure sensor or level transmitter be used in a Zone 2 hazardous area?
The short answer is Yes—in most cases, a Zone 1 certified sensor can be installed in a Zone 2 hazardous area, provided that the equipment's protection type and certification are suitable for the application.
Understanding "Ex ia IIC T5 Ga": What Does Each Code Mean?
If you've ever looked at an explosion-proof pressure sensor, level transmitter, or flow meter, you've probably seen a marking like this:
Ex ia IIC T5 Ga
At first glance, it looks like a random combination of letters and numbers. In fact, every part of this marking provides important information about where the equipment can be safely used. Let's break it down.
Ex
Explosion Protection. The first code, "Ex", simply means the equipment is designed for use in explosive atmospheres. It indicates that the product complies with international explosion protection standards such as ATEX or IECEx.
Whenever you see Ex, you know the equipment has been evaluated for hazardous-area applications.
ia
Type of Protection. The letters "ia" indicate the explosion protection method. In this case:
Intrinsic Safety (Ex ia). Intrinsic safety means the electrical energy inside the equipment is limited to a level that cannot ignite explosive gases, even under fault conditions.
Among intrinsic safety ratings:

Ex ia Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2
Ex ib Zone 1, Zone 2
Ex ic Zone 2 Only
Because Ex ia provides the highest level of intrinsic safety, it can even be installed in Zone 0, where explosive gas may be present continuously.
IIC
Gas Group. The code IIC specifies the type of explosive gas the equipment is certified to handle. Gas groups are classified as:

Since IIC covers the most hazardous gases, equipment certified for IIC may also be used in IIB and IIA environments. This gives users greater flexibility across different industrial applications.
T5
Temperature Class. The temperature class tells you the maximum surface temperature the equipment can reach during operation. For T5: Maximum Surface Temperature = 100°C. Temperature classes are:

The lower the allowable surface temperature, the higher the protection level.
Equipment with T5 certification can safely operate in environments where gases may ignite at temperatures above 100°C.
Ga
Equipment Protection Level (EPL). The final code, Ga, indicates the Equipment Protection Level (EPL). It describes how safely the equipment can operate in hazardous areas.
EPL Applicable Zone
Ga Zone 0. An explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods.
Gb Zone 1. An explosive atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation.
Gc Zone 2. An explosive atmosphere is unlikely to occur during normal operation, and if it does occur, it exists only for a short time.
Because Ga represents the highest level of protection for gas atmospheres, equipment marked Ga is suitable for Zone 0, the most hazardous gas environment.
So what does Ex ia IIC T5 Ga actually mean?

In other words, a pressure sensor or level transmitter marked Ex ia IIC T5 Ga offers one of the highest levels of explosion protection available for gas hazardous areas.
Can Zone 1 Equipment Be Installed in Zone 2?
In general, yes. A sensor certified for Zone 1 is designed to withstand more demanding hazardous conditions than equipment intended only for Zone 2.
Therefore, a certified Zone 1 pressure transmitter, level transmitter, or flow meter can normally be installed in a Zone 2 environment. However, the opposite is not true.
A Zone 2 certified sensor should not be installed in a Zone 1 area because it has not been evaluated for the higher explosion risk.
Why Certification Matters
Not all explosion-proof equipment offers the same level of protection. Before selecting an industrial sensor, engineers should verify:
The applicable hazardous zone
The protection type (Ex ia, Ex db, Ex d, etc.)
Gas or dust classification
Temperature class (T1–T6)
Ambient temperature rating
ATEX or IECEx certification details
Simply reading "Explosion Proof" on a datasheet is not enough. Always review the complete certificate to ensure the product is suitable for your application.

Whether your project requires ATEX, IECEx, or both depends on the destination market. ATEX is mandatory for equipment installed within the European Union. IECEx is widely accepted in international projects across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Australia, and many global EPC projects.
