The last time that they met was in Istanbul in 1918 after the loss of war and Axis surrender. They met at Hotel or Restaurant, together with 4-5 German officers and 4 Turkish officers, they said farewell to each other. At that time My great-grandfather, according to his memoirs stated that " It was a great honor to fight side by side with friends and especially with you General" (by referring Kemal Ataturk, since he promoted a General Rank at that time). And Kemal Ataturk responded "don't be despair Colonel, I have the utmost confidence that these dark days will pass and both our nations will get their pride back again from this defeat, I wish luck to all of you" This was the last time they saw each other. Years after my grandfather told, he never saw his own father so happy at the day he got the news that Kemal's Armies defeated the Greeks after Turkish offense at Dumlipinar and entered the Smyrna.
