Atari reveals more information about their new gaming system, the Ataribox

in #atari7 years ago

Atari is launching a new gaming system called the Ataribox. The main page doesn't offer much information, but we can get more from their emails sent to the press.

Atari offers some information about the Ataribox hardware, saying it runs on a customized AMD CPU and on RADEON graphics (meaning AMD as well), however, no full specification has been released. On the software side their base is linux, and they say that along the gaming component they'll offer a "complete PC experience", so it'll also have multimedia, streaming, browsing and social capabilities. They also claim their system won't be closed, meaning people will be able to access and personalize the os and also be able to use content purchased from different platforms as long as the hardware and software is supported (so something like steam and gog games, for example).

They inform the Ataribox will come with retro-games and recent titles preloaded. They plan on launching it on indiegogo this fall with a price range of 249-299$, and they would start shipping on late spring 2018.
