Atari CEO Confirms the Company Is Working On a New Game Console

First look: A brand new Atari product. Years in the making.

From VentureBeat

Atari CEO Fred Chesnais told GamesBeat in an exclusive interview that his fabled video game company is working on a new game console.

In doing so, the New York company might be cashing in on the popularity of retro games and Nintendo’s NES Classic Edition, which turned out to be surprisingly popular for providing a method to easily play old games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda in HD on a TV.

Last week, Atari began teasing a new product called the Ataribox. The video released on a non-Atari web site showed a picture of some kind of hardware product, but many people wondered if the teaser was fake. Others had no idea what the video was showing about a “brand new Atari product years in the making.”

After all, nobody makes a game console with wood-grain siding. But at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Chesnais told me that the rumors are true.

“We’re back in the hardware business,” he said.

Chesnais declined to describe a lot of details about the console. But he said it is based on PC technology. He said Atari is still working on the design and will reveal it at a later date.

Chesnais said that Atari’s revival is well under way. Atari filed for bankruptcy protection in 2013, but Chesnais bought it and pledged to make it great again. The company is now profitable, and it is engaged in making mobile games. It is licensing its brands more widely, such as licensing its Atari name for the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 movie.

This would be so awesome, I heard rumors of this for a decade though, please let this actually happen. I remember my parents buying the 2600 for us when I was young for like $400....bet they aren't pleased about that one now a days looking back but my childhood was filled with Atari and Nintendo so its nostalgic for me to see a come back happen. Great post, gave me some hope here lol

Funny I used that in an earlier post, fits this one well lol

Ugh dont do it market is closed to The big 3 . what ever happen to that Alien ware console system?? Did that do anything???

That's an odd point of view; don't do it because others are. How would we ever progress as a species, if we never do something because someone is already doing it well?

I'm interested to see what it's like, if it's crap; hey-ho, if not, it may disrupt the market. Not that I play these things anyway, but I like to see progress in tech.

nothing odd about it... its business... Facebook was thinking of putting a phone out.. They scrapped the idea and for good reason.. Samsung and Apple HOLD that market.... BlackBerry barely hanging on.. You bring in a new product its bound to fail... Remember The Microsoft phones?? nope.. EXACTLY.. same with gaming systems.. Sony and Microsoft (and Nintendo) hold the market... Alienware Tried and Failed... couple of others tried and failed... It's about business not about progress as a species

Myspace held the market before Facebook, Nokia held the market before Samsung and Apple, Nintendo held it before Sony, the list goes on and on.

If we don't bother to do things because others are successful, then there will be no progress, either in business or as a species. But you know, if you want to have that attitude, I'm not going to stop you; just pointing out the fallacy of that type of thinking :-)
