For @customnature's #aswcontest, the theme this week is "In the Woods". Here in the Missouri Ozarks, we love to hike around in the woods, and there is plenty of abandoned shit to see!!!

Between the small towns of Winona and Alton, Missouri, is the only remnant of what once was a very small, yet operational town. The town of Surprise, now referred to as "Turners Mill", was the site of a mill powered by an uphill spring that manufactured ground corn and milled wheat. According to The Alton Advertiser, A post office called Surprise was established in 1895, and remained in operation until 1925.

Last October, my friend @hethur240 and I hiked the trail to the spring where this water wheel was once functional, and it does actually jump out and surprise you!

There is so much neat history and scenery in the Ozarks and just making this post makes me want to go out and explore again. Thanks @customnature for the fun contest and for the inspiration!

I always stand in awe and wonder at the immense effort it took to haul the materials and build such things when the only transportation available was the steam engine. Thanks for sharing!

It really is amazing to think that something so spectacular was built without modern technology. I read on one of the info posts by the wheel that logs for the post office were floated down the Eleven Point River to the site and that oxen hauled in some of the other supplies. Neat stuff!

That is a great photo of the water wheel I hope you win :)

Thank you! It’s very impressive to see in person. I want to go back and visit! :)

Awesome, good luck!
