ASW contest- My first entry!

in #aswcontest7 years ago

Ohhhh, this contest is one I LOVE at this moment and I also have a crapload of inspiration for it, thanks @customnature for hosting this.

So what does ASW mean then??

ASW stands for abandoned shit weekly. Well, half of my island is currently abandoned after hurricane Irma, that means enough to find! So: here we go!

Welcome to the end of my street!

Yes, even in my own little road is a lot of abandoned crap. All the plants, grass, weeds and leaves were blown out of the tree, and all of a sudden in the middle of that there was this car. Our street didnt have any sort of this car before the storm, so this car was picked up by the wind and dropped there.. Boom...!

Nobody knows who it is from, of where it came from. And the funny thing is, nobody really dares to touch it. So the door has been open since September, and all the weels are still on, nothing has been stolen. (This might sound strange to hear for you guys, but post hurricane is like anarchy. People just take what they can find, and tires are scarce with all debris on the street). Slowly the grass is starting to eat the car. And unless somebody will remove it, which is very unlikely I believe, it wil disappear in its surroundings.

In the back of the car you see the remains of a warehouse, the Heineken storage. This building also has severe damage, and not a soul is there to be seen. It still has loads of pallets with booze inside and I even saw a car inside, from somebody who was trying to save it from the hurricane. The building is unstable at the moment, and every day the walls seem to lean over a bit more, untill one day the building will collapse. The only souls around there are the securityguards making sure that nobody risks their life going into the building, just to get a beer.

Wow. Nature often takes man-made things over a long period of time... but other times, it will claim them in an instant, like this.

Its amazing to see all around how fast nature is eating manmade stuff! Thx for hosting the contest @customnature! Its really cool!

I think the island where you are is probably worse than Puerto Rico (where I am), though the pictures are very similar. I'm amazed you stayed.

From what I understand Puerto Rico is way worse than by us. But it could also be a matter of perception of course :) You guys had way longer issues with no electricity countrywide, and inflow of for instance medication.

We have our general stuff back in order, but all I's need to be dotted.

And yeah, that I stayed had a couple of reasons. Ive been here for a couple of years now so I call this home. Also Im a nurse here in the hospital and as you can imagine, it was super busy by us. So leaving that would also feel really bad I guess. Having a job and a roof on my house is already enough for me I suppose haha.

Is puerto rico already visiting material again? Was planning to drop by this year, but dont know if that is such a good idea

It's ok, they have been having the famous Saint Sebastian festival and yesterday was packed. As for medically speaking, it's dangerous here. I have yet to get two nerve tests to see how much damage has been made to my spine and can't hardly stand, sit and sometimes walk. I only managed an MRI, which the physician prohibited me from lifting not even 5 lbs. Oh Maria has done more damage in that manner, I also lost a cousin. So in this aspect, maybe we are far worse. Many shops closed, many doctor's have closed their practice. Pretty alarming.

Yeah that sounds a lot worse than what is happening here!! Stray strong and safe there, those things wont be fixed overnight

That's a perspective I havn't seen about Irma. Thanks for the photos.

Funny no one's taken anything off that car but the beer....what the heck? Can you sneak past security maybe right afyer the colaps?

You can easily sneak in. But its a damn bad idea to go drinking stuff thats been in the sun for 4 months hahhaha.

Still though.... All that beer going to waste!!! It's alcohol abuse!

Lmao my country is run like an abandoned shit. Whats the reward? And do dump sites count? 😄

Check @customnature for all the rules in the contest :)

Yeah our country is like abandoned crap at the moment as well in a lot of spots, and then you walk 10 metres and everything is alive again, very strange! haha

Oh yea that is weird. Are those favored areas? Higher class or something?

No just the main roads that are used to transport the tourists on are perfectly fixed clean and nice.
But where the normal people live has (understandably) less priority.
Take this car as an example. Its in nobodies way, its not blocking anything. So it doesnt have priority :)

Alright yeah it makes sense. And tourism is a big income probably for St Maarten right?

Main source of income actually. We dont have any export products or those kinds of things. So we are fully dependent on tourism. With also a small population of 40.000 here on the Dutch side, we dont have much other stuff to generate money, so usually foreigners bring in the money for us. Priority ;)

Wel I hope you still get your side of town and others in the same sort of priority back up and running smouth... I kind of like abandoned cars that bother no one!

a beautiful contest

Yeah I like the idea! We also have a abandoned hotel here since 1995, I still have some pix from that left I think hehehe.

Great pics...and a harsh reminder of what things are like for folks even many months after the hurricane. The rest of the world just moves on to the next disaster, don't we, but you folks are still going to be picking up the pieces for years.

Very true! Even though so much is happening and people are working so hard, when you step off the beaten track, these are the things you still see. It set back in everything at least 2 years

And for what its worth, I'll risk my life to get that beer.

Nehhhh dude!! All these beers have been in the sun for months, I bet it tastes like crap!

Where are you from?? @karinxxl and your birthday ...???
