Abandoned Shit Weekly contest #18; my entry, fire hydrant taken over by a tree.
I found this several years ago when I was living in Portland. This is just outside of Washington Park on the west side of town. More than likely it is still there I'm sure. I never seen anything like it and I thought it was cool as shit to see this tree grow around the Fire Hydrant like this. Hope it is a winner :-). Thanks for looking!

Nature is amazing! I would have been surprised if it was still functioning :)
Thanks! I probably should of got some more shots of it. I've seen lots of overgrowth but not like this. The tree like totally consumed this thing.
Yo this is so cool!! Damn. Moving from the east coast to Bend in a few months and am definitely gonna have to go find this thing
How long will you spend in Portland before going to Bend? Just hike back from Washington or Forest Park. In fact I think it might have been Forest Park I was hiking through. Either way it is the northwest part of downtown Portland. It is in the neighborhood like on the edge of the mountain there before you hit the park. So the roads are all fucked up. It was like the tree melted around the Fire Hydrant like that. One of the coolest things I ever seen! Also, if you get a chance, go to the coast. There is a little small town called Netarts. There you will find the Octopus Tree. Seriously, you are meeting one of the tree gods.
I'm not necessarily planning on spending a certain amount of time in Portland or whatever but I have friends all over the northwest and like to travel around in my free time so I'm sure I'll be spending a lot of time there after moving out that way. Thanks for the tip! I'm definitely going to check it out. I've spent time snowboarding at timberline in the summer before and have explored the coast a little bit but I haven't heard of Netarts. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
The tree is just grabbing his drink. Cheers!
