[EN] Lost Place: Abandoned Chapel and Building No. 34 at Former Tuberculosis Sanatorium Grabowsee (Heilstätte Grabowsee)

in #aswcontest6 years ago (edited)

The "Lungenheilstätte am Grabowsee" was the German Red Cross' first hospital of its kind and an needed answer to the wide spread of tuberculosis at that time in history. In a report for a contemporary journal on tuberculosis, Chief Surgeon Dr. Schultes wrote: 'Initially planned as an experimental facility it was built to answer the question of whether lung tuberculosis could also be successfully treated in the lowlands of northern Germany.'

Coming spring 1896, 27 barracks were erected on the secluded Brandenburgian forest area of about 20 hectares, leased by the forest treasury for 50 years. (Source)

Deep in the Brandenburgian Forests lies the large complex of the former Lung and Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Grabowsee.

Inside the numerous buildings we had to tread lightly and mind every step.

Worn and torn. Time and decay clawed on these buildings.

As a nice-to-know bonus story:

The myth of Grabowsee, translated (German source below).

The sunken city in Lake Grabow.

In the region between Sellenthin and Cummerow's dairy, in the Demmin district, lies a lake called Grabowsee. In earlier times there stood a town called Grabow, which was once destroyed by an earthquake and gave the lake its origin and name. People say that in bright weather you might still see the towers of the city at the bottom of the water. Near the lake you can still see the ruins of a castle, which is called the Grabow Castle by the people of the area.

From the documents of the Pomeranian Society for History.

An abandoned beauty, it still looks beautiful. Good pic @dennis.bacchus.

What a pity that nobody is taking this on. Could turn into a nice and secluded holiday resort.

There are some 'forces' at work, but their efforts are more art-driven, I suppose. "Kids Globe" they call themselves, if I remember correctly. Best to visit the place on own terms, made some quite extra-ordinary acquaintances edging on the spooky side there. Maybe I expand on that in a later post. Nevertheless, just my impression. ;)

Excellent news . thanks for sharing
