The growth of live streaming competitive and non-competitive eSPorts, and their audiences, has increased exponentially the last several years. The way we watch content in both offline and online gaming continues evolve and viewership continues to grow.
eSPort tournaments have been around for decades – Harvard University hosted one of the first tournaments on October 19, 1972. Viewership at that tournament was just under 1000 people. Compare that to the first live-streamed eSPorts event, Dota 2 game in August 2011, that had a viewership of more than 1.5 million people. This kind of growth has no end in sight.
The increase of online viewership has supported the status of online streaming sites like Twitch TV, which has over 15 million daily viewers. Experts have estimated that each of these views spends at least 100 minutes viewing content. One market research report, released by Newzoo, found that competitive eSPorts alone generated 323 million viewers in the 2016. Of those, 161 million were considered casual viewers and 162 million viewers considered themselves eSPorts enthusiasts.
In a separate 2017 report, Newzoo reported that there were over 2 billion gamers worldwide that generated $101.1 billion USD in 2016. This astronomic growth in revenue has attracted huge deals from all over the gaming industry. Hardware manufacturers like NVIDIA and AMD and software developers like Microsoft are all clamoring to get on board. Even digital media giants like YouTube and Facebook are getting on the gaming band wagon with big sponsorship deals.
And now Asura World is ushering a new era with the world’s first self-sustainable eSPorts platform. Asura World can be broken down into four areas: eSPorts betting, professional guides, community matchmaking and tournament hosting, as well as forums and discussion. The forum is divided into sections including: general, match discussions, humorous content, stories, Gameplay Discussions, Tips and Tricks and others.
Everything in Asura World is focused on improving experience and maintaining an interactive community. They plan aim to involve the community in the decision-making process for as many facets of the platform as possible, gradually taking it forward into a self-sustainable platform for eSports.
