Astrology's New Dawn...?
I'm an Ophiuchian ... Ophiuchan ...Ophiuchon ...Ophiucharian ...Ophiuchese ...Serpent-bearer ...Serpentarians...Whatever! - not a Sagittarian! This is sure to cause such a major change in my life! 😨 😔
The gist of the astrology used by many people is that ancient astrologers in Europe 🌍 (the first known source was possibly in Babylonia, but the Chinese 🌏 also have an ancient system) looked at the constellation the Sun passed through at the time of your birth, ALONG WITH OTHER FACTORS THAT ARE IGNORED IN NEWSPAPER "HOROSCOPES," 😯 to try and predict not just your personality but also your life. The Chinese (I'm a fire Horse), the Javanese, and other nations/ethnicities have their own zodiacs. Astrologers who do it "right" also look at multiple factors to determine your sign(s), your personality and your life, not just which constellation the Sun went through at the time of your birth. Factors include: day of the week, month, day of the month, year, time of day, position of the Moon, and other factors that may be determined from the world around us or through math.
Netflix's "Explained" has a nice bit on astrology, but don't expect to become an expert! You could start with Wikipedia's article (not the best resource, but it's a start).
Ophiuchus is one of about 21 constellations that the Sun passes through on the horizon these days, and thus your European zodiac sign is possibly out of date like mine - even without considering any of the extra ones that astrologers ignore. How dare they! 😡 How could the ancients make sure a horrible mistake, you ask? Well, although Ophiuchus actually has a timeframe that is larger than Scorpio, its stars aren't as bright. Others are also dim and/or small so the ancients excluded them. Is it possible that they just weren't visible enough? Sure but with advances in technology a whole lot more is visible, and that should be taken into account by astrologers to improve the veracity of your horoscope, right? Nope. 😕
But wait! Which constellation the Sun touches when you're born depends on WHERE you're born, which means that for many people outside of the area an astrological system comes from, it's NOT RELEVANT! 😭 This applies to ANY astrological system that relies on the fixed position of constellations that must be visible when you're born - if they're not visible to you! Bummer! So, I guess I'm not a Sagittarian OR an Ophiu...whatever! Oh no! My life is quickly spiraling into chaos! ⚠
How could that be? Well, consider that the orbit of the earth, the tilt of the planet and other factors that have changed since those ancient times. Astrologers have not kept up with the actual "sciency" (tongue in cheek) part of astrology: charting the constellations and their changes. In fact, many seem to be reticent to update astrology to match the ancient rules with the current positions of the constellations - just another reason you can't trust (European) astrology. This is not to say that there are no astrologers who have adopted Ophiuchus (and other constellations) or tried to update astrology, but they seem to be in the minority.
For centuries, astrology was enjoying a well-deserved dance into death, but it got a revival due, in part, to the New Age movement that started with the hippies, as well as a clever person who convinced a newspaper to run her full (yet not) horoscopes for the great, unwashed masses. It was a massive hit that spread to newspapers worldwide, over time, and is now readily available on the Internet. Nancy Reagan dictated ex-president Ronald Reagan's life using an astrologer in California. When that came out in the news in the mid-'80s, it was a shocker for a while but it was overshadowed by bigger issues. I could go on and on about how Nancy would dispose of members of Ronnie's team but...Suffice it to say that she was a master of character assassination. And...I'm digressing, sorry! 😥 Some people pay their doctor to assure their baby's sign via c-section! 😤
What about the planetary zodiacs? Surely they are going to be more accurate because they're not sidereal - they're in the solar system, right? Wrong. 😬 The only things with gravitational fields that are near enough are the Sun 🌞 and the Moon 🌝. In addition, the positions of the planets, their orbits and so on have changed since ancient times. Giant asteroids and comets MIGHT have an impact (FOCL), though. If you'd like to have a planetary zodiac, go live on Uranus or Neptune. 😜
The points I'm trying to make are these:
- Although astrology is systematic, it hasn't been updated based on modern positions of "influencing" bodies and constellations. This means that, at the very least, it is hundreds or thousands of years out of date. Oops!
- Real scientific systems constantly update based on new data and findings, so any system that refuses to update itself is more like a part of a cult or quack science.
- None of the constellations and planets have any real impact on us on a day-to-day basis (other than saying "Ooooh, so pretty!"), if at all. Look to the Sun and Moon for that. Oh, but NASA's budget is affected by the planets. ;) Now, if another planet were to spin out of its orbit and collide with Earth, THAT would have an impact! 😝
- There should be at least 13 zodiac signs but European astrology hasn't kept up with new data.
- You can't rely on an astrology system that uses constellations that were not visible from where you were born. If you were born in the US, any system that ignores this fact can't logically work (not that any do).
- Astrology is, therefore, bunk. Nonsense. Rubbish. Garbage. Trash. Balderdash. Blarney. Hooey. Tomfoolery. 💩
But, please, don't stop drooling over your silly horoscopes - all those POOR astrologers would have to go out and get a REAL job! 🙄
