Ever wondered why the moon is grey?

in #asteroids7 years ago

Today I learned the answer and want to share it with Steemians!

The absence of atmosphere has consequences on the lunar surface, by not slowing down any of the particles that fall from outer space, soil and rocks are constantly impacted by particles of all sizes. These micro-meteoroid impacts over millions of years have left a fine powder structure on the lunar soil called 'regolite', a dark grey to brownish colour.

The other color seen is in the darker regions of its surface. They are 'seas' of solidified lava. They are due to the release of magma through cracks that occurred during the ancient impacts of large asteroids. This lava flooded large craters (a thousand kilometers or more) and formed the dark' spots' we see from Earth.
