I have read articles that people have written, after contacting their lawyer before a trip. The dollar number that comes up goes something like this.
$200 dollars is the safe bet. Anything beyond that, you are on your own.
Now, if that is true. Don't travel across the USA and back, thinking to pay cash for fuel. Just saying. Unless you are willing to look for ATM machines.
