Ecuador will grant identity card to Julian Assange

The Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, confirmed on Thursday the granting of the Ecuadorian identity card to the founder of the WikiLeaks revelation portal, the Australian Julian Assange. "Ecuador is obliged, according to its Constitution, to respect the human rights of people with international protection," the minister explained.

"The Ecuadorian Government is empowered to grant the nationality to the protected person" to, in that way, "facilitate its inclusion to the State that hosts it," the minister assured. He also recalled that Ecuador considered granting diplomatic accreditation to Assange, a request that was denied by the authorities of the United Kingdom.

The chancellor has also qualified that the problem of the asylum does not lie in the British Justice, but in the "fears" to "possible risks" on the part of third states.
