Many People have heard about a Cochlear Implants(CI's), but not too many people understand what it really is.

What are Cochlear Implants? A Cochlear Implant is an electronic device that, That helps promote a sense of sound. Specifically created for those who are profoundly deaf, but some with severe hard of hearing also take interest.

A cochlear implant has four main parts

  • microphone ( used to receive sound from the surrounding environment.)
  • Processor (Which selects and chooses sounds that have been picked up from the microphone)
  • Transmitter (Turns sounds from the processor into electronic pulses)
  • Electrode Array (receives electronic pulses, and sends them to the auditory nerve

Please Note that a Cochlear Implant is not the same as hearing.

Cochlear Implant Vs. Hearing Aid
Now that we know what a Cochlear Implant is, how is it different from a Hearing Aid?
Hearing aids are used to amplify sound, while Cochlear implants create a sense of sound. They do this through by-passing damaged ears, and sending a signal directly to the auditory nerve. A Cochlear Implant requires surgery, and extensive therapy.
