WHITE ASH AND IT'S NEMESIS

in #ash6 years ago

White Ash is the only hardwood that can be cut down and used in your stove the same day. All other hardwoods need to season for a year before burning. The scientific name is Fraxinus americana. Some common uses of White Ash are flooring, millwork, boxes/crates, baseball bats, and other turned objects such as tool handles, and of course firewood.

This is a picture of the Emerald Boring Beetle, believed to have been unintentionally introduced from Asia in the 1990s, it was first spotted in Michigan in 2002. The picture to the right shows the trail left by the larvae. The damage is done in the vascular layer of the tree. Damage to this layer inhibits the flow of nutrients and water to the leaves. 99% of all trees infected will die. The Emerald Boring Beetle was spotted in Green County, which as the crow flies is only around 10 miles from our farm. Several nearby towns have harvested their Ash trees in advance of the infestation that seems unavoidable.

A trap is hung to lure in the beetle. The trap is not used for eradication of the beetle, rather to detect if there are any in the area.

As of yet I have not recognized any telltale signs that this destructive beetle is present. Here in NY state laws have been passed limiting the transportation of firewood. A 10 mile radius has been established. Kiln dried wood is the exception as the heat kills all insects that may be present.

Thanks for the tips and lesson. You said Green County, is that in New York state by chance?

Green County is in NY State.

So we are neighbors! I'm next door in upper Ulster county.
