Nyertun - Stand Up For Efrîn. The tune supports the International Aid Campaign For Efrîn !
Donates to Kurdish Red Moon Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê

A bit of background for this tune, is that I've been involved in a friendly neighbor project, where we help refugees to settle in in my hometown Herning. During the last few years about 600 refugees from the civil war in Syria, have been settled in Herning, and most of them are from the Kurdish minority.
When Turkey attacked the area Afrin, which was under Kurdish self-rule in january 2018, I joined a friend for a demonstration to make the danish people aware of the situation, and was persuaded to give a speech about it. That's how i met Dilovan, a 17 year old Kurdish girl, who have been in Denmark for 3 years. Well I call her Dilovan, because the Kurds in Syria was forced to arabization, so she go by an Arabic name Rahima, a word that means mercy, that's Dilovan in Kurdish, and actually also a Kurdish girl-name :-)
This girl have learned enough Danish to be able to express her thoughts about the suffering of her people in Danish, and her writing have been published in several Danish newspapers. In March 20187 I arranged a public meeting at our public library, where I made a short introduction about the Kurdish people's history, and Rahima told about how it is to live in safety, when you know your people are suffering from attack. A keyword in her speech was "I used to think the worst word was war, as I had my childhood in Aleppo stolen by war, but now I know the worst word is silence" referring to the silence Turkey's attack on a free democratic movement have been met with by the free democratic societies of the West... Those wrods burned themselves into my mind and eventually became a text about Dilovan, my lovely friend

"A childhood stolen by war, scattered in fear, new hope in foreign land
She used to think the worst word was war, now realize even worse is the silence

When in face of evil
No-one care to speak
When bombs are falling
We need to take a stand - Efrîne Berxwedana

Safe to discover her youth, assured of a place still there, her grandparents house
Crushed to despair by a turkish bomb to rubble, scattering her hope

When in face of evil
No-one care to speak
When bombs are falling
We need to take a stand - Efrîne Berxwedana

She used to think the worst word was war, now realize even worse is the silence
so come on now, speak up, let her again put flowers in her hair and dance among the olive-trees

When in face of evil
No-one care to speak
When bombs are falling
We need to take stand - Efrîne Berxwedana"
