MATKI DANCE... #16 Sketchbook project.
The Matki dance has its origin in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and is mainly performed in the Malwa region. This dance is essentially performed by a single performer which is performed only by the women, although by the end of the performance other women and singers also join in. Women perform this dance during the wedding ceremonies and birthdays in their village.
This dance form has been developed by nomadic tribes in the Madhya Pradesh. Now it is in this state that women are frequently seen carrying water in earthen pots to their homes, and so it is by using this daily chore as a template that this dance style eventually took shape.
During the performance, the women balance a small earthen pot on their heads, known as ‘Matki’ in Hindi. The woman carrying the pot performs the dance taking a circular position. Despite the movements of the hands and legs of the dancer, she skillfully balances the pitcher on her head. The Matki dance is an expression of happiness in the tribe. The dancers work very hard to bring their dance to such finesse.
The women performing the Matki dance wear a colorful lehenga or a sari, and beautiful ornaments. However, the faces of the women performers is covered as per the tradition existing in the region.
Dhol is played by the men of the tribe, while the women perform the Matki dance for all. A special tune of the drums of the Malwa region is essentially used in this folk dance. The music picks up pace and the dancers perform in sync with the beat, along with the balancing act
