A painting by Raden Saleh set a new record as a masterpiece of Indonesia's most expensive artwork auctioned in France, last weekend.

The painting sold for 7.2 million euros or an equivalent of about Rp 119.9 billion to an unidentified Indonesian collector.

Jack-Philippe Ruellan auctioneer stated, the auction of painting Hunting Bull (Bull Hunt) by Raden Saleh successfully implemented.

"This is a record for the painting of Raden Saleh and Indonesia," Ruellan said as quoted by The Jakarta Post, Thursday (1/2/2018).

Art critic as well as consultant of the art collection of Presidential Palace Agus Dermawan T also confirmed that this is the highest price for the work of Indonesian artists.

"Several years ago, the works of S Sudjojona, Lee Man Fong, Hendra Gunawan, whose size is larger, sells for Rp 60 billion," said Agus.

The initial price of Raden Saleh's auction is 200,000 euros. Shortly before the auction begins, the price jumps to 1 million euros.

This prediction was made based on the sale of a similar painting by Raden Saleh entitled The Deer Hunt sold at Christie's Singapore auction house in 1996 for 1.5 million euros.

Ruellan said, there are 12 enthusiasts who participated in the auction by phone and two others attended. The auction process was fast.

One of the parties who participated in the auction of the painting, added Ruellan, is Museum Pasifika in Bali.

Related collectors from Indonesia who bought this painting, Ruellan said this is a good thing because this painting will be brought back to Indonesia from Paris.

However, keep in mind that the buyer is a private collector, so this painting will not be visible to the public unless there is an exhibition featuring this painting.
