ATILOGWU DANCE
With dozens of culturally unique enthnicities, Nigeria is blessed with a dazzling array of traditional dances which are often displayed at local, national and international cultural festivals. While the various dance routines of nearly all Nigeria's ethnic groups are captivating in their own ways, some are clearly more fascinating than others, and have been found able to keep audience perpetually enthralled by masterful combinations of skill, energy and style. One of such dances is the Atilogwu dance of the igbo ethnic nationality of Southeast Nigeria, not just a local African dance but now an internationally famed theatrical feature if major social gatherings.
Atilogwu (translated from the igbo dialect as "is this magic ) is indeed nothing short of magical . Atilogwu is highly energetic dance for which combines rhythmic steps with nimble acrobatics in a manner that will leave the most talented Olympic gymnast applauding. The dance is believed to have originated around the areas now within the borders of Enugu and Anambra States , but is widely performed by young men and women at festivals across much of igboland, leading many to term it the national dance of the igbos. A typical Atilogwu ensemble includes singers, flutists, and instrumentalists jamming away on local drums, gongs and other percussion instruments. The dancer themselves are clad in colourful costumes complete with fluffy bands around their arms and thighs and elaborate feather-adorned headdresses.
Anyone could take to a dance floor to attempt Atilogwu's gymnastic steps, but the professional dancers who perform at social gatherings with brimming smiles on their faces had to go through arduous training sessions to perfect their art. Atilogwu dance is appraised as a highly significant art heritage beyond the entertainment value that is you endears it to spectators. Every single stomping move, acrobatic jump, or wiggle has profound cultural connotations, most of which are only fully grasped by native Igbos.
