60th birthday of the Smurfs👤 | Belgium Celebrates 💦
Brussels is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Smurfs with interactive exhibitions and events that are painting the town blue – the distinct color of the cute cartoon characters. The Brussels Expo Park is hosting a special Smurf Experience, allowing visitors to walk into the village of the Smurfs and get to know their favorite characters up close and personal.
Cartoonist Pierre Culliford, who was once known for his pseudonym Peyo, created the Smurfs in 1958. The creatures were initially invented as supporting characters in a comic of some medieval heroes, but soon became stars in their own right.
The Smurfs have become a symbol of Belgium, alongside its national football team, beer as well as snacks like chocolate and waffles.
