The coming of AI, fear or rejoice?!

Is the real AI… better than in the movies?!

For someone that grew up during the 80’s era, the theme of the “rising of the machines” was well present in our collective imagination and was always a great idea for the post-Apocalyptic movies, where mankind survival was a must over the taking of the brutal and killer machines.

Movies such as the already classics: Tron, The Terminator series, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, the more recent trilogy of The Matrix, and even the horror science fiction saga series Alien, show us worlds where the machines rule over their creators and in one way or another try to annihilate them or use them for their own benefits.

What is an AI?!

(…) any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal. Colloquially, the term “artificial intelligence” is applied when a machine mimics “cognitive” functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as “learning” and “problem-solving”. (…)

The AI is no longer just part of the science fiction entertainment, now even some of the movies above look so obsolete and with no real idea of what an IA can really do. That can even override in a second all of our past imagination.

Can an AI really overcome us in a near future?!

If we are not “careful” enough… blah blah blah... probably we had heard that same sentence over and over again in the past, yes?! This every time the AI overcoming us issue is thrown on the table.

So, why should we fear a mere machine, something that was after all created to help and assist us in our most difficult needs, like waking us up in the morning?! (joking)

Can AI machines lose control or can we lose our domain over them?!

Is known now that the processing of the Human thoughts can travel around an average of 120m/s. Is quite surprising, umhn?! Some people can even do it faster and others a bit slower than that, but never the less totally surprising, and we do not even use all of our brain capabilities. (imagine if we could!)

But a machine… a machine, has some advantages over us, it can be 100% logical, have no emotions, what so ever… they can focus on one just one task, without any distractions, perform tasks meticulously and quickly, faster and more precisely than any living human can.

Machines or Humans, who are left behind?

Equipped with the latest cutting-edge technology the AI’s could easily deduct that the human beings are not essential to the planet. Would take less than a thousandth of a second for them to decide that we (the humans) are nothing more than walking parasites and a treat to their own existence. And together they would issue a collective order to eliminate us, one by one, fast, quickly and without any warning. Well, this is the dark side Apocalyptic story that we all know… thank you, Holywood!

But, is the AI such an evil, a terrible “Skynet” ready to eliminate us?! Or instead is the AI the next and rightful most absolute evolution for us, humans?!
The possibilities are limitless, what an AI can do for us is much more than any blockbuster fiction movie.

Instead of fearing AI we should be open to it.
Maybe, AI can overcome us… but would it be that different than us sapiens when overcoming the Neanderthal?!…
