ART EXPLOSION WEEK 34: Erotica
Hello everyone! How had you been? I hope you had a fantastic weekend and a glorious weekday ahead. It has been a week I posted an artwork. Well, I suppose. Anyway, this is my entry for week 34 of Art Explosion Contest brought to you by @juliakponsford. This week's theme is Erotica.
erot·i·ca \i-ˈrä-ti-kə\ - works of art or literature that deal with sex and are meant to cause sexual feelings : erotic works
-Merrian Webster Dictionary
Food Erotica
This one is actually my first entry for our group exhibit on surrealism. I just finished this yesterday and it took me few hours to finish this artwork. I actually love while doing this because I was able to express a portion of myself with the use of my brush and acrylic paints.
Process
You might wonder why I chose such obsure subject in such bold theme. Well, here is the reason why. I have always thought something that the sexual feelings you get from other people can be equated to the feeling you get when eating good food, and by eating good food means you eat pleasant and fresh bounty.
Materials Used:
- framed canvas
- acrylic paint
Process
I started making a sketch for this artwork using an HB pencil.
I usually sketch using simple shapes and lines. And since we are using vegetables to create a juxtaposition of objects, the common shape used is circle.
I plan the hair to be made up of grapes, the face with cabbage, and then the body with some fruits and vegetables. But since the space is canvas is small, I will try to limit it with few number of objects.
I do not want it to be crowded with stuff, unless the fruits and vegetables are small.

After a quick sketch, I proceeded with painting the hair of our subject. Since it is made up of grapes, I used blue as its base. By the way, for the acrylic paints, I used the basic colors only.
The thing about painting this one is that I used thin paint brushes since I do not want specific colors to dominant once the base colors has dried. But in times that I am using oil paint, I prefer colors to mix. Wet on wet technique works well for me.

My mind while painting is atually messy so I paint on the areas where I want to paint.
At that moment I wanted to paint the background so I chose colors that would complement on the fruits and vegetables.
I used the red acrylic first and then mixed a bit of orange to create gradiation of colors.
After those strong colors, I used other bright tones such as yellow and chrome. I know it needed more touch at the moment when I am almost through.

As you can see, I already worked on the face of our subject. I used green and yellow green but since the colors of this acrylic brand is that that great, it is not that visible.
Just to create a cabbage-y effect, I used the color white for the lines and then a mixture of red + green to create a shadow effect.
Color white is also added on the corner of the subject to highlight the subject from the background.

Let us fast-forward a bit since I got so hyped up when I started painting. I never took time to take photo of the process. It was just then when I realized that my work was almost done.
I made the pineapple bigger than the original plan I had in mind. I wanted to add my style as an artist so I made the design for the pineapple as contemporary.
The final product can be seen as the first photo of this blog post. As you could observe, I used carrot instead of tomato. I then made him covered with abaca fiber.
If you could observe, I made the subject look like McDonald since i had been hoping that someday they would serve healthy meal and snacks. But anyway, that is just a very weird wish I have in mind. It is a fastfood like duh Gail!
