ART: Hummingbird Painting - Poster Colour Artwork with Description of Steps
Hello Steemians! I would like to share the painting that I made last night. I love birds and I thought of painting a hummingbird. This is the first time I tried painting a bird using poster colours and I wasn't very sure on how to blend the colours and create details especially on the bird but I did it. In fact, I enjoyed learning from small mistakes in the process of making this artwork.
Tools and Materials:
- A HB pencil
- An eraser
- Buncho Poster Colour Paint
- Painting brushes - Round and flat brushes
- Water
- A palette to mix paint
- Tissue paper to absorb excess paint / water
First of all, I drew some guidelines (horizontally and vertically) on the paper so that I can draw the picture with the accurate proportions. Then, I drew a basic sketch comprising of only the shapes and outlines of the artwork.
Then, I drew some details such as the flower petals and leaves. Then , I erased the guidelines so that I can start to add some colours to the black and white picture.
I started painting by adding the background colours first. I used orange, yellow, yellow green, sky blue and purple. I used the wet on wet technique where I used a medium flat brush and wet the paper by brushing a generous amount of water on it first. Then, I picked up some paint and brushed that on the paper, giving it a wash. I did the same thing for all the colours. If you are going to try this, take note that your paint will dry lighter than the colour that it is in when it is still wet. So, if you would like your colours to appear more vibrant, then I suggest using less water when you pick up your paint or add a second layer of paint.
As the background was drying, I proceeded to paint the flowers using the wet on dry technique. I picked little water with the brush and picked some paint and used a small round brush to paint it. I mixed purple, pink and red to get the colour that I was going for.
After that, I painted the branches and the leaves using reddish brown, sap green and yellow green colours. I also painted the carpels of the flowers in yellow.
I painted the hummingbird by mixing a number of colours. The colours that I used were yellow green, golden brown, reddish brown, yellow and black. Then, since the green parts of the plant have dried, I added more dimension to the flower branches by adding some shadows and highlights. On the other hand, I added a very small dab of orange to the carpels of the flowers.
After the artwork dried completely, I continued to add a few final details. I added outlines for the flowers, leaves and branches in paint. I was not satisfied with the background and wanted it to look more vibrant. Hence, I added another layer of the background colour using the same colours for all of the areas except the bottom left. I added some diluted indigo to the bottom left to create a cooler shade of the purple. I also made a few adjustments on the flowers and the wing of the bird to intensify the colours and details. This is the completed artwork. I hope that you enjoyed reading my post and hopefully, you find it helpful and cheery. Till next time, happy painting and blessings to you!
