I Designed A Desk For @jazzyfish

in #art6 years ago (edited)

We've recently been talking about upgrading our bed from a queen to a king. In doing so, I had to figured out the best way to fit all our existing furniture.

But as you can see, with the windows, closet, and doors positioned where they are, there are only so many options for where we can put the king size bed. It leaves @jazzyfish with a filing cabinet for a nightstand.

So, having been absolutely hooked on the topic of woodworking lately, I decided to design her a new desk which widens the desktop slab from 42 inches to around 58 inches, it'll house the filing cabinet, it'll give her a shelf for her monitors, as well as a nice space for a nightstand. And there will be TONS. OF. DRAWERS.

However, I unfortunately lack the tools to actually create this beast, but I've decided to start a new 5 year plan which ends with me having a shop to work in with all the tools I need.

For this project, I'm working in Photoshop because I'm not familiar with any of the 3D CAD programs, so I'm using what I know. With that in mind, I generated my inch-by-inch grid and made my slab, which is 1" thick and 58 1/2" wide. This measurement is a combination of her current desktop width + the accommodations for her 15" wide filing cabinet, as well as 1/2" of overhang on all sides.

Next, I began adding the housing & base for the filing cabinet. Part of this base is going to act as the base for a stack of drawers, which we'll see start to come into the design in the next step.

In this step I began building up the structure to the right main support which will house 5 drawers (one of them hidden). The gap in the section near the top will be addressed in the next step.

I then completed the left main support structure which, again, will house more drawers. This time 4 as there is no hidden drawer on this side. The aforementioned gap from the previous step has been filled by another piece which will house a wide center drawer. Now we can really see the main shape of the desk begin to appear.

So, now let's add some drawers. First, we'll see the pieces for the sides, the backs, and the bottom panel of each drawer. I've also pointed out the hidden drawer, which lies beneath the large bottom drawer. It opens inward towards the feet and is disguised by a false-front piece of the trim which will wrap the bottom of the whole desk.
We'll add the front facing pieces and bottom trim in the next step.

Here we have all the drawers complete with face pieces and handles, as well as the trim which will wrap the bottom of the whole piece. There will be a hinge on the piece of trim where the filing cabinet housing begins at the right support so that it acts as a stop for the filing cabinet.

Then, for the final touches, I've added a 1/4" piece of backing to the whole thing, as well as a 5" shelf for both her monitors. The shelf will sit atop 3 support pieces which will have strips of felt adhered so that it can be easily slid into position on the main desktop slab. This will free up ample space on her desk, and the shortened width of the shelf will allow for space on the right end of the desk above the filing cabinet to act as a nightstand.

So, hopefully in the coming years I'll be able to make this a reality. Until then, I have quite a bit of saving to do, and we'll make do with the furniture we have.
