Web-Gnar's Smart Museum Visit

Went to the Smart Museum in Hyde park this weekend. It was a good visit. There were children painting in the lobby, making good abstract work! ... And some children (younger than 9) jamming in a band in the courtyard outside the gallery.

Above is a painting by Joan Mitchell. Back when my dad was in college, Joan Mitchell came into his studio after visiting all the other student's studios and said "Now THIS is what I'm talking about!" when she saw his expressive use of paint.

Here is a painting by Kerry James Marshall. He is a painter from Chicago. His narrative paintings are amazing to see in real life. the textures are fascinating. There is paper glued on to the surface of the canvas which is not stretched, but instead has grommets to pull it tight allowing him to roll it up to store. Not that he needs to, its in a museum now.

Water Nymphs. Someone came by this one and left a big black crayon smudge on the woman's right hand near her face.

Forgot the name of this artist. Good painting though. It is not easy to make something abstract like this Good. Observe and learn from the masters.

The special exhibition was of a Japanese painter who evolved into using his hands to manipulate the paint instead of a brush. Smart Museum curates towards what will inspire children, its a great space.
