Residents of the village Kholui took part in the people's militia under the leadership of Minin and Pozharsky during the Polish intervention in Moscow in 1612.

After that, Kholui was presented from Russian Tsar to Prince Dmitry Ivanovich Pozharsky. Kholui in the 17th century gained fame as a trading village with frequent fairs. In addition, the village became famous for its icon painters who decorated their icons and paintings of churches and temples of surrounding towns and villages.
Masters of icon painting Kholui with time became known not only in Russia, but also in the Orthodox states of Europe.
But at the beginning of the 20th century, in Kholui, the iconography gradually changed to a painting of lacquer miniatures. In Kholuy, a branch of the Mstera painting department was organized, and in 1934 the artel in Kholui became independent.
