Art - SPAWN - (step by step included)
Hi All!
Drawing spawn today, one of my favorite comic book characters of all time. such impact on the comic book industry too. Watched the HBO Span series recently and decided to give it a go at Spawn. This one is a graphical approach on the character:
Used Photoshop software and a drawing pad, done digitally without sketching, just getting into the matter this time, similar to my previous post.
I am fixing upon the style I produce to avoid getting carried away in various approaches all the time. Spawn is created by Todd McFarlane, one of the best comic book artist out there and a very inspirational individual with a huge amount of success in the industry, founder of image comics and McFarlane toys.
New spawn movie is in the works and Jamie Fox is fixed for the role wile Todd will direct the movie himself. Have such high hopes for this one.
Anyway, let us go trough the process of making this one:
Basic sketch, just the mass, to many chains, but getting to that later, playing with black and white here
Adding some lines, thinking about adding cape, started with a small right lower corner stuff
Removing some chains, working on lines and we are going to need a bigger cape
Cape is in
Splash, fix, splash, fix, splash, fix doing the details in this one
Eye work, energy flowing souls in there and a bit of light work, did not want to overstep it this time, seemed enough

With the positive effect, the neon green energy flowing souls seem straight contrast on the overall aura of the painting.
I do not follow the HBO series that you mentioned so aside from Spawn looking like the shadow of death, I wonder what is with the character that made it your favorite?

Well, thanks for asking, Spawn makes for a very interesting character who went to hell and is obliged to serve it, but in fact is a righteous guy. All the conflict he endures on earth with the mixture of haven and hell is very intriguing. The series aired from 1997 to 1999 I think and is animated
On a second look, the neon green looks too flashy. How about reverting to just green like the eyes on photos in between the first and the last?

The green light that oozes from his eyes are a nice touch, and I also like the many teeth :).

Look at his green eyes, I think the drawing turn out to look really nice. He has this monsterous look on his face which says "don't just come near me" lol! Is he that deadly in the series?
I hope you don't get disappointed with the new movie coming up, hopefully your expectations will be met...😀
Oh yeah, he is both deadly and really calculated, one tough act of story on him.
I have no doubts about the movie, the old movie was released in 1997 and it was a miss, the creator of the character worked on animated series and was really involved and it turned out great. Now, the new movie is directed by the man himself, the creator, story teller and illustrator of Spawn and the movie is going to be R-rated as it should be. Huge effort made after all those years :D

Yeah, about the green, it's the souls, from the comic, a big representation of Spawn. Kinda splits the illustration and adds up to the effectiveness. Thank you!

Incredible how such complex sketch is build up, when you see final result, you think of Goodness where to start, but when you show your process steps there is a technique and that is really helpful to understand where and why you started. I like the idea of digital art used in this sketch, that gave its intense colors and that furious expression :)
