Thank you. I don't think i've ever tried working with real scratchboard but going to keep that in mind

I highly recommend trying clayboard. It's roughly the same as scratch board but thicker and does not come with a coating of black ink. Instead you can paint in the black ink areas as you see fit then scratch them away.
