We need to exercise our negotiation rights because everything is negotiable. But that does not mean you will always get the fee that you want, but at least if you know you have tried and gained some experience from doing it.
You are not arrogant when you negotiate but you ensure you don't accept low fees and the quality of your work doesn't get less than what it is genuinely worth. Many of us believe in order to gain some commercial experience, we need to start somewhere and work for free. This belief is an advantage to employers because they get your time and skills without any costs. Offering free service in the name of getting your foot in is in fact not sharp. Show off some entrepreneurial spirit and research where you fit in and what are the fees.
