Waterfall into lake.jpg

Yellow rock - 2011

The scenery's focal point is a waterfall running down rocks covered with moss. This is autumn season when the trees' leaves are turning brown and yellow. Light shines through the thickets and the water is illuminated before gently flowing down into a cool, deep river. The current is moving lazily under lily paddies and wild flowers, only a slight reflection of the sky occurs along the opening. The water erodes the rock into rugged edges and wearing down the base. It creates staircase steps and zig zag the current between boulders. Next to them, the trees band together into groups, rising higher than where the sun light can't reach. Their shades provide shelter to the grass that grow rampant at the river's edge.

The painting technique is thick, strong brush work layered on top of one another. The colors are mixed into slightly different shades and piled on multiple times. The common base is dark brown which carries the theme of the painting, with the shadow of the trees and the color of the leaves. White is used to highlight area of interest, to direct viewers' attention to the overall composition.

I think I might have painted another landscape on top of this one. Luckily I took a photo of it. Looking back now, it feels a lot nicer than I remembered. Having a brownish base makes the painting seem serene and relaxing.
