RE: My New Home Task in Digital Painting. It was Extremely Difficult for Me

in #art8 years ago

I downvoted this post.

First, the material is derivative. This might not rise to the level of actual copyright infringement (and its not plagiarism because OP did not take credit for it), but it is a highly derivative work. At best, OP made a copy of a photograph by hand. At worst, OP ran a photograph through a photoshop filter. Either way, it is not original content, and does not deserve the level of reward it recieved.

Also, there is compelling evidence that SV is using votes for guild votes without authorization, and continuing their "opt-out" policy. Votes obtained this way are obtained by fraudulent means, and should be countered to the extent possible. Though the OP bears no blame in this, she is the beneficiary of it and the votes she gained through SV's improper use should be countered to the extent possible, IMO.

FTR -- looking at your blog, which seems to be mostly original work, i think its unfortunate that you've made a name for yourself with a post that is half a step down from copy and paste.

I don't think you should decline payout. I do think that it would be an admirable gesture for you to make your next post an original work, and decline payout for that one. IDK if it would make it OK in my mind, but it would certainly make it better than it is.

Thank you for your comment.

I thought I clearly stated it in my post:

"So, the task was to make a digital painting from B&W photo."

Making a digital painting is not the same as tracing it digitally and coloring it.

IMO, making a digital painting could certainly be tracing a photo digitally and coloring it in, if that is what you were planning on doing. That is the beauty of photoshop. People do it all the time.

Take comics for example. Artists have reference files of people in different, common poses for their characters so they can quickly get the shape of the human form for each scene without spending a lot of time on anatomy and perspective.

Not only do they trace over those, but they will go online and find different objects they may need. Once you quickly trace them to get the right shape, the coloring in whatever style you are doing is what's giving it its unique look.

The colors and detail are not the same as the original photo and it certainly takes talent to get the blending/shading to look right even if the photo is traced.

Tracing is tracing, and thank you.

@stephen.king989 Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

you feel like a bot, constantly repeating the same sentence. But I get it you are dealing with a lot of bullshit probably
