Basing Tutorial - Cracked/Dry Earth
So I decided to start basing my miniatures which I have painted up for Arcadia Quest and Massive Darkness. This is a full tutorial which details the process I have used to achieve the result below.
You will need:
- Agrellan Earth
- Rhinox Hide
- Agrax Earthshade
- Screaming Skull
- Lahmia Medium
- Abaddon Black
- Grass Tufts
- Superglue
Note: I used Games Workshop colors for this tutorial but you can use any brand of colors that you like. Although I don't think there is another substitute for Agrellan Earth which is a special paint that produces the textured effect as seen below.
Paint Rhinox Hide onto the top of base. Allow to Dry.
Apply a thick amount of Agrellan Earth, use a second brush to push this closer to the hard-to-reach places like underneath the feet. Give this at least 1-2 hours to dry.
This is the effect that should be produced after it has dried.
Drybrush the base with Screaming Skull.
Apply a wash of Agrax Earthshade and Lahmia Medium mixed in a 1-1 ratio. This will help blend the colors together as well as seal the base to protect pieces from flaking off. While this is drying you can neaten up the edges with Abaddon Black.
Pick a grass tuft, remove it from the sheet with a hobby knife or by pinching it from the base.
Apply the tuft to the base using super glue. I tend to use tweezers to help me with this part as it can be quite fiddly.
Base complete, I hope you found this tutorial useful!
